Call for Entries: 2015-2016 PSA Travel Photography Contest

Call for Entries: 2015-2016 PSA Travel Photography Contest

This is our second year entering in the Photographic Society of America (PSA) Inter-Club competition. While the wording of the “Travel Definition” guidelines have changed slightly, the intent is much the same. If you are new to competition and want to start with a category that is a little less restrictive than the Nature category, this one may be for you!

The PSA Inter-Club competitions pit us against other PSA member clubs and are open to all paid LVPC members.  Lee Levin-Friend is serving as our PSA Club Rep & Competition Chairperson.

 LVPC Member Entry Due Dates

  • Travel Round 1:  Sunday, November 1, 2015
  • Travel Round 2:  Sunday, February 7, 2016
  • Travel Round 3:  Sunday, May 1, 2016

PSA Travel Definition (Updated for 2015-2016)

A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally. There are no geographical limitations. Images from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography are not appropriate. Close up pictures of people or objects must include features that provide information about the environment. Techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. The only allowable adjustments are removal of dust or digital noise, restoration of the appearance of the original scene, and complete conversion to greyscale monochrome. Other derivations, including infrared, are not permitted. All allowed adjustments must appear natural.

 Travel Entry Highlights

  • Submissions: Three travel images can be entered per round and should be e-mailed to by midnight on the Member Submissions Due date shown above. Please include “PSA Travel” or a similar wording in your subject line
  • Reprint permission: Entry assumes we have your permission to feature your photo with credit on our website, closed Facebook group, club e-mail messages or press releases. If you do not approve of one or more of these uses, notify us at the time of your entry. It also assumes that PSA scores awarded to your work can be shared with fellow club competitors and members
  • Format & size: JPG in sRGB color space. Maximum dimensions are 1024 pixels wide x 768 pixels high. Portrait-oriented images cannot exceed 768 pixels high.  File size should be 1.5 MB or less
  • Filenames: Should include your first and last name and unique descriptive title.
  • Portraits: Images of people which do not include sufficient environment are liable to be disqualified as not meeting the concept of “place” with “distinguishable environment.”
  • Post processing: Images which have been too “worked” or “processed” are liable to be disqualified or receive low scores as not “appearing natural”
  • Age of photo: Photos can be of any age. They do NOT need to have been taken in the past year.
  • Locations/Subjects: Don’t forget Pennsylvania’s special charms! “Travel” images need not be limited to far away or exotic locations; suitable local and regional attractions are welcome.

PSA Travel Competition Round 1 Club Entries

******** Results Update *********

The results of PSA Travel Competition Round #1 have been received. Thanks to all those who have submitted work!    Overall, LVPC came in at 11th out of 19 competing clubs in the “B” section.   Our total score was 57 points with the top club at 65!  So you can see it was a very tight field.  In order to get a sense of how the photographs scored, here are the entries with the score received:

Alone in  a  Crowd – Pooja Dhar – Score 8

Alone in a Crowd at Sonnenkopf

Dog Days of Summer – Buddy Eleazer – Score 10

Dog Days in Monument Valley

Evening Portland HeadBob Becker – Score 11

Maine Fall 2015

Shanghai Motorbikes- Howard Sherer – Score 8

Passing Rain In Bryce Canyon – Russell Heller – Score 8

Passing Rain In Bryce Canyon

Water Town Vendor – Karen Campbell – Score 12

WaterTownVendor Zhujiajiao China

What can be learned from entering competitions is that subject, light, composition, and that “wow” factor all must be present in high scoring images.  For Travel competitions, a sense of place is certainly a critical feature along with “an image that expresses the characteristic features of culture of a land as they are found naturally.”

If you have any questions regarding your potential entries, please feel free to ask!  Experienced members will be more than happy to provide some feedback.

PSA Travel Competition Round #2 are due February  7 .

PSA Nature Competition Round #2 are due January 3.

Call for Entries: 2015-2016 PSA Nature Photography Contest

Last year, our club participated in the Photographic Society of America (PSA) Inter-Club competition for the first time.  This year, in addition to competing in the Travel competition, we are also registered to compete in the Nature category, a favorite photographic subject of many of our members.

The PSA Inter-Club competitions pit us against other PSA member clubs and are open to all paid LVPC members.  Lee Levin-Friend is serving as our PSA Club Rep & Competition Chairperson.

Our first round of Nature entries is due at the beginning of October and the Nature guidelines are a bit more restrictive than the Travel category. Please review the guidelines thoroughly before submitting entries and feel free to post any questions you may have here as comments on our site or by e-mailing

 LVPC Member Entry Due Dates

  • Nature Round 1:  Sunday, October 4, 2015
  • Nature Round 2:  Sunday, January 3, 2016
  • Nature Round 3:  Sunday, April 3, 2016

PSA Nature Definition

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of nature history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighted more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans or where those human elements are in situations depicting nature forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.

Nature Entry Highlights

  • Submissions: Three images can be entered per round and should be e-mailed to by midnight on the Member Submissions Due date shown above
  • Reprint permission: Entry assumes we have your permission to feature your photo with credit on our website, closed Facebook group, club e-mail messages or press releases. If you do not approve of one or more of these uses, please notify us at the time of your entry. Entry also assumes that PSA scores for your work can be shared with fellow club competitors and members
  • Format & size: JPG only with Adobe RGB or sRGB color space. Maximum allowed dimensions are 1024 pixels wide x 768 pixels high. Images should not exceed 1.7 MB
  • Camera type: Photos may be taken digitally, or on film and scanned
  • Filenames: Should include your first and last name and title. Titles of photos that make it through LVPC judging will be read aloud during PSA judging, so make them descriptive and stay away from “cute” titles. “Micronesian Kingfisher” is better than “Orange and Blue Bird.”
  • Allowable post processing: Enhancements and modifications that improve the presentation of the image, but don’t change the truth of the original natural story. Natural-looking HDR, focus stacking, dodging and burning, cropping.
  • Unacceptable post processing: Removing pictorial elements other than by cropping, combining pictorial elements from separate images or rearranging elements.

LVPC Upcoming Photo Shoots

Hi Everyone,
Our committee has been busily planning some interesting photo shoots for you to enjoy. We are also in the process of creating a survey that we would like everyone to answer. We are going to use your responses to help us plan future photo shoots.

First, let’s explore some reasons why you should join us on the photo shoots.

1. You will have the opportunity to get to know the other members of the club as there is more time for socialization. This is #1 because I think it is the most important. The members of the LVPC are very friendly, but as a new member it is easy to feel ignored at Program Meetings because there is not a lot of time for socialization.

2. You will be able to explore places that you may never have been before.

3. There are members with varying degrees of photography experience at every photo shoot, and every member is always more than willing to answer any questions you might have.

4. The shoots are a great opportunity to learn a new skill because there are other photographers that are willing to share their knowledge.

5. We visit some places over and over again because they provide us with the opportunity to critique our pictures and improve them as our experience grows.

6. Finally, the #2 reason why we enjoy attending our photo shoots. We usually get together for breakfast, if it is really early, or for lunch after our shoots. We always enjoy the great food, but the company is even better!

Upcoming Photo Shoots to put on your calendar.

Submission Instructions for Club Members Photographic Exhibition at Sigal Museum

The Lehigh Valley Photography Club (LVPC) Members Photographic Exhibition, November 2nd thru December 15th at the Sigal Museum, located at 342 Northampton Street, Easton, PA

Northampton County: Shaped by the Hand of Man

The theme exhibit entries should be of or similar to photos that could be from our region. Northampton County is being defined by the ORIGINAL boundaries of PA, thus eastern PA. It is not a requirement that the images be taken in Northampton County; however the images should represent something that one could expect in our region and must include at least one element caused by the ‘hand of man’.   Subject matter could include artifacts from local native Americans, architecture of our region, fields cultivated in rows via the local farmers, images of local produce at the market, even people or products from our region, etc.  Feel free to be creative.

Each Lehigh Photography Club Member with up to date dues is allowed to submit Three (3) images. Due to the anticipated number of entries, the contest will have a two-step process.   The first step process is a “selection step” by the which the total number of entries will be down-selected to approximately 50 images.  For this step, images should be submitted as digital entries to:

It’s requested that you size the image to:

  • 1080 pixels on the short size
  • a resolution of 92 pixels/inch and
  • convert the images to the sRGB color space.
  • Name files with: Members name and Image title.  Anticipated size of completed piece would be helpful too.
  • This will decrease file size and make handling easier.  If these directions are confusing to you, upload your image as you see best and we’ll do our best to make the conversion correct.

The goal is to showcase as many member’s works as possible in this event and generally at least one work will be accepted from each member entry prior to a second selection for any member.  The images will be selected by a committee nominated by our Exhibition Chair.  The decision of this committee is final.

The owners of those ‘top images’, will be notified by October 16th that their images have been selected for the show.

  1. Paid members of Lehigh Valley Photography Club
  2. Entrant must have captured and created the original exposure.
  3. Entrant may submit a maximum of 3 entries.
  4. Digital editing and manipulation is allowed; however, final product must originate from a photographic image by you.

  1. Registration will open on October 1, 2013 (Tuesday).
  2. No Entry Fee is required but dues should be current.
  3. Digital images must be uploaded by Monday October 14, 2013, 5:00 PM.

Please note: Due to the time constraints at this time, and if your dues are not current, or if you would like to join and enter this exhibit, you may do so.  Please note this in your submissions including a note as to how you are handling dues payment in your submission email.

then send your dues ASAP, via mail to:

Lehigh Valley Photography Club

Or pay via Paypal at: THIS LINK.

All entrants with images accepted for exhibition will be notified via email.

Works should be should be hand delivered to the Sigal Museum, Easton, PA, Friday, November 1 between 10AM and 1PMThe club recognizes that this window is very tight and that some have jobs that preclude their delivering works to the museum.  To help this problem, we will also accept ready works at our regular club meeting on October 17, 2013.  We recognize this alternate date is an even shorter window for delivery, so we recommend printing to standard sizes such as 11×14 and using standard pre-cut mats and frames such as a 16×20 frame.

The selected images should be printed, matted and framed as noted below for inclusion in the gallery show.  During the Gallery showing period, works will be offered for sale to the public at a price determined by the photograph owner.  Entrant name or affiliation may be displayed on the photographic work submitted for exhibition.

  • A completed Entry Label (sent with results) must be attached to the back of each photographic work prior to delivery.
  • Outside dimension of finished work (including mount, frame, etc.) shall           not exceed 32 inches in width or height.
  • Eligible entries must be printed, mounted/framed and securely wired for hanging.  No clips or “fast frames” will be accepted.  No other forms of hanging options will be accepted.  With that, creative presentations including: framed with or without glass, framing in plexiglass, canvas prints, etc. are up to the maker’s discretion.  Works mounted on hardboard or other materials can be accepted if it can accommodate secure wiring, and also have a finished look. Mats should be white, black or neutral shades only.
  • The exhibition committee reserves the right to not accept any work not following exhibit guide lines or professional standards.

  1. The top (approximately) 50 images will be displayed from November 2 to December 15, 2013.
