B.N. Singh — The Art and Science Behind Bird Photography

April 19 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Presentation: The Art and Science Behind Bird Photography

Birds are one of the most challenging wildlife subjects to photograph. B.N Singh will share with you some of his photographs and explain behind-the-scene challenges that he’s encountered when taking them. He’ll bring and discuss his camera equipment, setups, tools beyond camera and lenses, field techniques, innovative ideas to capture difficult shots, and will share some of the mistakes made and lessons learned during his journey.

Living near the coast, B.N. immediately became interested in photographing shorebirds which drove him to experiment with ultra-low angle photography. This technique has allowed him to create pleasing foregrounds and backgrounds while isolating the subject in the frame. He’ll describe the technique and show you examples.

Although he has traveled 23 states across the USA and Canada to pursue bird photography, he tends to focus mostly around New Jersey. He believes there is plenty of beauty right in our own backyards if we just develop the vision to see it. B.N will discuss how to begin to develop that vision and how to start capturing intimate images of birds in their natural habitat.

His goal as a photographer is to generate an emotional response through his images and inspire people to explore, discover, learn and enjoy the beauty we are offered in nature. B.N. Singh will do just that with his presentation. Please join us.

Biography

B.N. Singh grew up in a small village of North India surrounded by abundant habitat for wildlife. After completing his Ph.D. in Biotechnology from India, he joined Rutgers University, NJ, in 2005 as a scientist and have been researching cancer and other diseases.

His fascination with bird photography began in 2009 while visiting our National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges. One of the best parts of being a hobbyist bird and nature photographer is that he’s able to spend more time outdoors enjoying nature. Furthermore, it permits him to pursue his interests and not be driven by commercial goals, allowing him to depart from more traditional representations of any subject. On the downside, being mostly a self-taught weekend photographer, he has worked hard to become proficient at bird photography, capturing variety with an identifiable style.

Many of his images are featured for bird ID at allaboutbirds.org and are regularly featured in nature books, calendars and publications. Most recently, he made the covers of the 2017 Cornell Lab of Ornithology monthly calendar and All About Backyard Birds: Eastern & Central North America guide. B.N. also has dozens of images published in All About Backyard Birds: Eastern & Central North America and All About Backyard Birds: Western North America guide books. A few of his most recent images will be in next year’s Cornell Lab of Ornithology monthly calendar and more than three dozen in their 2018 Bird-A-Day Daily Calendar.
