Call for Entries: 2015-2016 PSA Nature Photography Contest

Last year, our club participated in the Photographic Society of America (PSA) Inter-Club competition for the first time.  This year, in addition to competing in the Travel competition, we are also registered to compete in the Nature category, a favorite photographic subject of many of our members.

The PSA Inter-Club competitions pit us against other PSA member clubs and are open to all paid LVPC members.  Lee Levin-Friend is serving as our PSA Club Rep & Competition Chairperson.

Our first round of Nature entries is due at the beginning of October and the Nature guidelines are a bit more restrictive than the Travel category. Please review the guidelines thoroughly before submitting entries and feel free to post any questions you may have here as comments on our site or by e-mailing Contest.LVPC@gmail.com.

 LVPC Member Entry Due Dates

  • Nature Round 1:  Sunday, October 4, 2015
  • Nature Round 2:  Sunday, January 3, 2016
  • Nature Round 3:  Sunday, April 3, 2016

PSA Nature Definition

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of nature history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighted more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans or where those human elements are in situations depicting nature forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement.

Nature Entry Highlights

  • Submissions: Three images can be entered per round and should be e-mailed to Contest.LVPC@gmail.com by midnight on the Member Submissions Due date shown above
  • Reprint permission: Entry assumes we have your permission to feature your photo with credit on our website, closed Facebook group, club e-mail messages or press releases. If you do not approve of one or more of these uses, please notify us at the time of your entry. Entry also assumes that PSA scores for your work can be shared with fellow club competitors and members
  • Format & size: JPG only with Adobe RGB or sRGB color space. Maximum allowed dimensions are 1024 pixels wide x 768 pixels high. Images should not exceed 1.7 MB
  • Camera type: Photos may be taken digitally, or on film and scanned
  • Filenames: Should include your first and last name and title. Titles of photos that make it through LVPC judging will be read aloud during PSA judging, so make them descriptive and stay away from “cute” titles. “Micronesian Kingfisher” is better than “Orange and Blue Bird.”
  • Allowable post processing: Enhancements and modifications that improve the presentation of the image, but don’t change the truth of the original natural story. Natural-looking HDR, focus stacking, dodging and burning, cropping.
  • Unacceptable post processing: Removing pictorial elements other than by cropping, combining pictorial elements from separate images or rearranging elements.

Additional Nature Entry Information

Photo Competition and 5 Minutes of Fame – May 21, 2015

The May meeting will serve as the basis for selecting works for the Club’s Exhibition at the Moravian College Gallery in Bethlehem, PA July/August exhibition. Exact
dates of the exhibit TBA and will be posted ASAP.  Guidelines for the competition are shown at the end of this post.

In addition to judging for the upcoming competition, we are bringing back the infamous LVPC “Five Minutes of Fame.”  This is when we give any willing member five minutes in front of the group, to do whatever you want, as long as it relates to photography.  Show us some of your work, teach us a technique, demonstrate a cool piece of equipment – just do it in five minutes, because that’s all you get.  (We hope to bring back timekeeper Ed Vatza, who’s got the strictest stopwatch on the east coast.)  Sign up at the meeting – first come, first served!  Spaces are limited!  We can’t wait to see what you’ve got!

Enter the PSA Travel Division Competition!

As a member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), Lehigh Valley Photography Club is eligible to compete in PSA’s national competitions against other clubs. We’ve chosen the Travel Division contest as our first PSA competition.

Our decision to enter was made shortly before the first entry deadline, so a small group of members responded to a special call for submissions to supply us with the our Round 1 entry in November. The results are in and out of 23 clubs entered in Group B, LVPC placed 11th with a score of 62. While it sounds like we are in the middle of the pack, the reality is that we are only a few points below the 2nd and 3rd place clubs, well within striking distance for the next round! The competition includes 2 more contests, and it is time to start preparing submissions for Round 2.

Here’s what you need to know to submit to PSA Travel Division Round 2

Who:  Any 2015 paid member is eligible to submit 3 images for consideration. A total of 6 photographs will be entered on the club’s behalf, only one per photographer.

What:  The PSA Travel Division guidelines specify that “A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place and portray a land, its distinctive features or culture in its natural state. There are no geographical limitations. Close up pictures of people or objects must include distinguishable environment. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.  Conversion to full monochrome is acceptable. Derivations, including infrared, are unacceptable.”

  • Portraits of people which do not include sufficient environment are liable to be disqualified as not meeting the concept of “place” with “distinguishable environment.”
  • Images which have been too “worked” or “processed” and no longer look like photographs are liable to be disqualified as not “appearing natural.”
  • Photos can be of any age. (They do NOT need to have been taken in the past year, for example.)
  • “Travel” images need not be limited to far away or exotic locations; suitable local and regional attractions are acceptable subjects.

When:  Entries must be sent to Contest.LVPC@gmail.com by midnight at the end of Sunday, January 25, 2015. Include titles for each image in your submission.

How:  Image specs are as follows:

  • JPEG format
  • Maximum size of  1.5 megabytes
  • Maximum width of 1024 pixels and a maximum height of 768 pixels
  • Portrait-shaped images must not be taller than 768 pixels.
  • sRGB color space

Previous winning photos can be viewed at:  http://psa-photo.org/index.php?divisions-photo-travel-interclub-competition. (Under the burgundy “PTD Interclub Competition” header, look for PHOTO TRAVEL INTERCLUB RESULTS by year and Round 1 Gallery, Round 2 Gallery, etc.)

Questions?: If you need any help with the image guidelines or theme, or have other questions, send them to Contest.LVPC@gmail.com.

Want to help?: If you are interested in volunteering as a juror for Round 2 or future contests, please let us know by e-mailing Contest.LVPC@gmail.com.

2014 Glennie Selections for LVPC

THE RESULTS ARE IN!  We Placed 33rd out of 85 positions!  That’s up from 53rd out of 91 last year.  This is a substantial improvement.

In addition to these fabulous team rankings, we had 4 images achieve acceptance merit status.  “Acceptance” means that though the image was not an award winner it was one of the top 1/3 of scoring images and will be included in the slideshow. This year’s competition included 833  images from 85 clubs with 612 different photographers from 22 of the United States and 7 foreign countries.

The four entries achieving acceptance honors are:

  • Fox Kits Playing” by Diane Richter
  • Having Fun in the Water” by Mike Montalvo
  • Watch Your Step” by Buddy Eleazer
  • We Need Each Other” by Chris Hornaman

You can read more on the results at http://www.mvcameraclub.org/Glennie/glennie-2014-results.htm

Thanks to everyone for your submissions.  Our selection committee had a really tough time selecting the 10 for the club to enter.  Based on Glennie criteria, the our selection committee placed special emphasis on ‘Story Telling’ with the image.  Below are our entries:
