Capturing the Beauty of the Winter Garden: A Journey of Resilience and Reflection

Anne Belmont
Capturing the Beauty of the Winter Garden: A Journey of Resilience and Reflection

November 21, at 7:00 PM ET

Anne Belmont's photography project, initiated during the challenging winter of 2020-2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, captures the serene and subtle beauty of the winter garden. Each winter since, she has continued to develop this project, finding inspiration and solace in the stark, quiet elegance of the season.

In the Midwest, winter presents unique challenges for a flower photographer. The usual vibrant subjects fade, and conservatories and greenhouses, once Anne's sanctuaries, were closed during the early pandemic. Faced with limited indoor options, Anne ventured outdoors. This change forced her to rearrange her thinking, embrace winter's harshness, and discover a new perspective on her subjects. Anne's unexpected transformation began as she opened her eyes to the beauty of plants and flowers in their dormant state. Winter's adversity revealed resilient subjects, rich with stories and metaphors. The muted tones of the winter landscape offered a calming and restful palette, contrasting with the dynamic colors of other seasons. Anne's newfound appreciation for this quieter beauty inspired her to delve into the concept of wintering—embracing the need to slow down, rest, and reflect.
Anne's project took on even deeper meaning as she faced her own battle with breast cancer last year.

The resilience she observed in nature mirrored her personal journey, offering her strength and insight. Her work became a testament to enduring hardship and finding beauty in stillness and survival.

Biography:
As a nature photographer specializing in flower photography, Anne’s greatest passion lies in capturing the beauty of flowers and botanicals up close. The small, often unnoticed details draw Anne to her subjects—the lines, patterns, textures, curves, and unique personality of each subject. She believes that if we slow down and look at nature in a more contemplative way, we will find subjects that convey impact and emotion.

With a lifelong involvement in the arts and a deep love of nature that started in childhood, photography became a perfect way for Anne to share her vision of the natural world with others. Her career as an art therapist reinforced her belief in the healing power of art and nature.

Anne is a team member and instructor for Out of Chicago Photography. She also presents at conferences throughout the country and teaches private workshops. As a Lensbaby Ambassador, she is passionate about using and teaching others about their creative lenses to enhance artistry and bring emotion into their work. Anne’s goal as an educator is to help others see in new ways, unleash their creativity, and bring their heart into their photography.
