Karen Waller
Echoes of Time & Nature

Thursday, September 17, at 7:00 PM ET

In this presentation, Karen Waller will take us inside her creative world, sharing not only her photographic work but also the deeper motivations that drive her to make images. She will explore the many sources of inspiration, including how challenging personal and creative moments can result in unexpected artistic breakthroughs.

Karen will discuss the themes that shape her work and why they hold personal significance. She engages with these themes through diverse genres including portrait, landscape, aerial and nature photography. Karen will also delve into her exploration of camera-based techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), discussing how these methods expand her visual language and open new ways of expressing emotion, energy and the passage of time.

Biography:
Karen Waller is an Adelaide, Australia-based photographer and artist whose work spans portrait, landscape, nature, and aerial imagery. Raised in rural South Australia, she developed a deep connection to the natural world that continues to shape her aesthetic and subject choices. Her long standing ties to the Yorke Peninsula remain a central source of inspiration.

Originally trained as a painter, Karen later transitioned to photography, carrying her painterly sensibilities into her visual practice. She has been recognised across multiple photographic genres and currently focuses primarily on personal projects and teaching workshops, particularly in techniques such as ICM.

Karen’s work explores the interplay of strength and vulnerability, beauty and discomfort, and the emotional tension between darkness and light. Through both portrait and landscape imagery, she seeks to reveal what is often overlooked and to challenge viewers’ perceptions through themes of fragility, loss, and human connection.
