Vision Under Pressure: Technical and Creative Lessons from the Edge

Thursday, October 15, at 8:00 PM ET

Many years ago, an older photographer took me aside and told me that if I was to pursue photography as a career, I would have to “make uncertainty my friend.” I don’t think I’ve ever received a truer piece of advice.

For over 30 years, Nikon Ambassador Corey Rich has used his camera as a backstage pass to enter worlds few ever see. From the vertical granite walls of Yosemite and the snow-covered peaks of the Karakoram to the churning whitewater of remote, raging Chilean rivers, Corey has built a career by embracing discomfort. In this presentation, Corey moves beyond the "single hero image" to share the gritty reality of what happens behind the lens. He explores the philosophy that true growth occurs when we lean into the uncomfortable and the uncertain—a theme he famously explored in his TEDx presentation. Whether you are hanging from a rope thousands of feet in the air or managing the high-stakes pressure of a big-budget commercial set, the secret lies in the ability to switch fluidly between technical execution, creative flow, safety, and rapid-fire problem-solving, all while managing the personalities of the athletes and clients.

While Corey’s "office" is often in a remote wild place, these lessons are universal. Whether your passion is photographing youth sports, landscapes, or wildlife, the pressure to "get the shot" remains the same. Corey’s insights are designed to be transferable to any subject, helping you find more joy and better technical results in your own photography.

Speaker 26-10 Rich

Corey has been at the forefront of the digital revolution since its inception. Having shot on the first video-enabled DSLR, the Nikon D90, and subsequently helping launch a variety of Nikon’s most iconic cameras, he has witnessed the total transformation of our craft.

In this session, Corey will share:
• The Power of Repetition: Why photography and filmmaking are crafts of endurance, and how to accelerate your growth by putting in the "reps."
• The Shortcut to Mastery: Technical tips and tricks evolved over three decades that will help you avoid common pitfalls and "save the pain" of hard-learned lessons.
• The Hybrid Mindset: Insights into the evolution of capturing stills and motion, and how to stay creative when the environment is working against you.
• The Backstage Pass: How to use the camera as a vehicle to lead a soul-filled life, creating deep connections with your subjects while maintaining the composure to deliver under pressure.

Join Corey for an evening of storytelling and technical insight that will challenge you to embrace discomfort, refine your craft, and use your camera to unlock a more adventurous life.

Biography:
Corey Rich is a world-renowned photographer, director, and Nikon Ambassador who has spent over 30 years documenting the pinnacle of human endeavor in the most extreme environments on Earth.
